GOLDEN THREAD EXHALATION
A valuable tool to promote relaxed acceptance, this breath focuses upon exhalation to ease the body into deep rest. Becoming aware of the power of breath, this pattern is often adopted instinctively by women during the first stage of labour.
The heart of this practice is softness. The lips are soft with a small space between them, small enough to hold a piece of tissue paper or small straw.
Take a natural in breath through the nose
Exhale through this small space between the lips, simply because the gap is tiny the breath takes time to release. No sense of force simply observe the breath lengthen, following it out as if a GOLDEN THREAD was spinning into the distance.
It should feel entirely effortless, completely comfortable and soothing. If you are struggling to exhale because the gap is too small, simply widen the gap.
If the image of a Golden Thread isn’t easily available to you, you might imagine you are gently blowing towards a candle flame or feather and that they are flickering the tiniest amount and without strain moving slowly further away from you as your capacity to breath, long, slow and smooth increases.
GOLDEN THREAD EXHALATION IN LABOUR
During first stage labour this breath can help ease through surges. Many women find it helpful to visualise the Golden Thread of breath breath pulling them safely through the surges, which can be seen as steep mountains, where the breath helps you over each peak, or as ocean waves, with the Golden Thread guiding you over the crest of each wave.
